Hairdressing and Barbering
VTCT Level 1 in Hairdressing & Barbering
A vocational qualification delivered over two years, this course will provide the knowledge and skills to allow the learner to be competent in the role of a junior Hairdresser or Barber. Within this qualification the learner will develop the knowledge and understanding of the anatomy of the hair, health and safety within the industry, client care and product knowledge.
The learner will develop a range of technical assisting skills in hairdressing and barbering services and interpersonal skills that will ensure they are able to communicate effectively with clients when assisting with salon reception duties.
Preparing for hair services, shampooing, conditioning and blow-drying hair
Assisting in the monitoring health and safety practices in the salon.
Assisting with salon reception duties
Assisting with shaving services
Assisting with hair colour and perming services
Assisting with plaiting and twisting hair and removing hair extensions
This qualification will prepare the learner for employment as an assistant junior hairdresser or barber in a commercial hair salon.
Whilst the primary outcome of this qualification is to enable the learner to gain employment as an assistant junior hairdresser or barber in the hairdressing and barbering sector, they can also progress to the next level of learning via a range of vocational qualifications at level 2, these include:
VTCT Level 2 Professional Standards in Hairdressing
VTCT Level 2 Professional Standards in Barbering
This is the only level 1 qualification in hairdressing that will confirm your competence for the job role of assistant junior hairdresser. This qualification requires the learner to work in a commercial salon.
VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy (VRQ)
The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy (VRQ) is a Technical Award specifically for 14-16 year olds. This course can be delivered over two or three years.
This qualification aims to support young people to:
Develop a broad and comprehensive understanding of the hair and beauty sector
Develop knowledge which spans the entire vocational sector and related industries
Develop academic study and transferable skills that will support progression either within the hair and beauty sector or more broadly

Hairdressing and beauty therapy has been, and remains, an extremely popular vocational area that many young people are enthused by and aspire to be part of.
The aim of this qualification is to use the hair and beauty sector as a vehicle to develop learners more broadly, so they are prepared and equipped with the knowledge, understanding and skills to pursue a career in any context.
Throughout the two-year course students will develop knowledge of the hair and beauty sector, products used, researching and marketing and designing briefs.
They will also develop skills in critical thinking, being reflective on self-performance and work produced, use of initiative and self-management, problem solving and communication skills – verbal, written and visual.
The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy (VRQ) has been designed in line with recent policy developments, including the Review of Vocational Education - The Wolf Report (March 2011) and meets the Department for Education's (DFE's) characteristics for high-quality and rigorous qualifications.
The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy (VRQ) has been accredited by the qualification regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and is part of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
